Britain in Hamburg

Hello Britain in Hamburg!

I'm John, as you will have gathered from my profile. I'm stuck back here in Birmingham, where I work for Birmingham City Council as part of the 'Excellence in People Management' programme. (I can bore you with the details on request.)

I have one foot in Hamburg because my fiancée has recently started working there and I'm looking to relocate as soon as I get a job.

My first two visits to Hamburg were school exchanges, and I enjoyed returning last month when my fiancée moved over. I really like the city: its vibrant city centre, individual quarters, restaurants, good public transport. My fiancée tells me she's discovering new stuff all the time, but I'm sure there will be plenty left to discover together when I get over there. I'm back in the Hansestadt for a few days at the end of September.

Anyway, I'm dying to move to Hamburg as soon as possible so I'm looking for any advice on getting a job. I've been to the Zentrale Auslandsvermittlung, and they were very helpful in pushing my CV to some public sector employers. I'm looking to broaden my search beyond the public sector, so would be grateful for any advice on companies that I could send speculative applications to. I speak fluent German, having lived in Germany for two years and because I speak to my fiancée, a German native speaker, in German.

Because I am employed as part of the graduate development programme at Birmingham City Council, I have moved between departments and have had the flexibility to work on a wide range of issues with very senior staff. For example, I am very involved in developing BCC's strategy for using social media and recently stepped in for the Director of Communications to speak at a national conference.

I'd really appreciate any help, and with any luck I'll be competing in the next Jack Russell race! (Not personally... you know what I mean.)

NB I'm not broadcasting my intention to relocate at work, so if anyone happens to have links with Birmingham City Council please try not to mention it!

I've been making some progress on the jobs front, having been over to Hamburg in the past few days. I was already aware of the website you linked to, but thanks nevertheless!

Let's hope that social media burst onto the scene some time soon!

I hope the weather gets better over there. I know we Brits always talk about the weather, but I was surprised when I came back to Birmingham yesterday to find it drier and less windy than Hamburg!

Hi John,

Hope you got help in finding a job in Hamburg. Social media have not yet arrived in business and administration. As soon as they wake up to the world of social media your skills will be badly needed. Britain in Hamburg has been a website advertising British themed events for some years and we have only recently re-launched it on Ning. So your input is appreciated.
Regarding your job search you might find some information here (if you haven’t looked there already) http://www.hamburg.de/arbeit
